Pages: 245-249 DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.23617772 Published: Oct 24, 2026

Abstract

Background: Transgender persons may encounter significant barriers to employment arising from social stigma, discrimination, educational disruption, inadequate organisational policies, and difficulties related to gender identity documentation. These barriers can restrict access to job opportunities, career development, and sustainable employment. Objective: This study explores the challenges faced by transgender persons in accessing employment in Galle District, Sri Lanka, with particular attention to social, educational, legal, organisational, and health-related factors. Methods: The study adopts a qualitative exploratory research design involving 25 transgender persons selected through purposive sampling. Data are collected through individual, semi-structured, in-depth interviews and analysed thematically. Ethical considerations include informed consent, voluntary participation, confidentiality, anonymity, and secure data handling. Results: The manuscript identifies six key themes concerning employment barriers: transphobia and social stigma, educational barriers, inadequate workplace policies, difficulties with legal documentation, pressure to conceal gender identity, and physical and mental health challenges. These issues may affect the ability of transgender persons to apply for jobs, participate in recruitment processes, obtain suitable employment, and maintain job security. The discussion also highlights the importance of gender-sensitive recruitment practices, supportive organisational policies, and inclusive workplace environments. Conclusion: Addressing employment barriers requires more than formal recognition of transgender rights. Employers, policymakers, and educational institutions should strengthen anti-discrimination measures, improve awareness of gender diversity, establish inclusive recruitment procedures, and provide appropriate workplace support. Such measures may help promote equitable employment opportunities and greater economic and social inclusion for transgender persons in Sri Lanka.

The Impact of Library Education on Reading Habit Among Senior Secondary School Students in Lagos State, Nigeria

Akano Michael Bolaji
Pages: 250-255 DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.23618101 Published: Oct 24, 2026

Abstract

Library education, which refers to the intentional teaching of students to acquire the necessary skills and attitudes to search for, analyze and utilize information and reading resources, is generally considered to be the basis of a lifelong reading culture. However, school libraries in many secondary schools in Nigeria have been found to be poorly equipped, poorly staffed and have little or no involvement in the curriculum in the regular classroom, despite the concern of a perceived decrease in students' voluntary reading. The paper provides a conceptual and theoretical discussion of library education and the reading habit of senior secondary school students in Lagos State, Nigeria. The paper adopts constructivist learning theory, self-efficacy theory, cognitive load theory, and a uses and gratifications perspective, and contends that using structured library instruction to foster reading habit works through three overlapping mechanisms: skill development (information literacy), motivational scaffolding (self-efficacy and autonomy), and environmental design (access to, exposure to, and modelling of). The literature reviewed in the empirical section from Nigeria, Africa, and international sources, all link active school-library user behaviour and information-literacy learning with increased reading behaviour and academic performance, and the competitiveness of digital media, coupled with the infrastructure challenges of public secondary school libraries in Nigeria. The paper suggests that library education is not an adjunct to instruction, but rather a major part of the instructional process, and offers a conceptual framework and a set of recommendations for policymakers, school administrators, teacher-librarians, and for future empirical research. Since this is a theoretical paper, no primary survey or experimental data were obtained; only an illustrative and clearly hypothetical framework is suggested as a guide to future empirical studies rather than as a reported result.

Identifying Factors Contributing to Low Academic Achievement of Grade 12 Students in Gedeo Zone: A Case Study of Basura Secondary School

Habtamu Shiferaw Mengesha
Pages: 256-275 DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.23618571 Published: Oct 24, 2026

Abstract

This study investigated the factors contributing to low academic achievement among Grade 12 students at Basura Secondary School in the Gedeo Zone, Southern Ethiopia. Employing a mixed-methods case study design, data were collected from 34 students, 10 teachers, 15 parents, and the school director through structured questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and classroom observations. The findings revealed that low academic achievement stems from a complex interplay of interconnected factors. Socioeconomic barriers were prominent: 76.5% of students reported missing school frequently or occasionally for family obligations, and 79.5% attended class without breakfast, directly affecting concentration and learning. Resource limitations were evident, with teachers reporting 70% textbook inadequacy and 90% finding library resources insufficient, despite 79.4% of students perceiving general materials as "adequate." Instructional gaps were identified, including a disconnect between teacher self-perception and student experience—while 80% of teachers felt well-prepared, 41.2% of students felt teaching methods did not cater to diverse learning styles, and 38.2% received feedback only rarely. Additionally, low student preparedness (only 35% consistently completed homework), limited independent reading (55.9% never read outside class), and minimal parental involvement (58.8% reported no involvement) further compounded academic challenges. The study concludes that academic underperformance at Basura Secondary School is not attributable to a single cause but results from a reinforcing cycle of poverty, resource scarcity, pedagogical limitations, and weak support systems. Recommendations include implementing a textbook lending program, providing teacher training on differentiated instruction and feedback strategies, establishing a school feeding program, fostering flexible parental engagement channels, and advocating for policy-level interventions to reduce class sizes and enhance professional development. A coordinated, multi-stakeholder approach is essential for sustainable improvement in student outcomes.
