Removing Fuel Subsidy in Nigeria: A Household and Firm-Level Analysis of Inflation and Purchasing Power
Keywords:

Fuel Subsidy, Household, Inflation, Nigeria, Private Firm, Purchasing Power.

Abstract

This study investigates the private sector implications of fuel subsidy removal on inflation and purchasing power in Nigeria, using BUA Cement Plc and Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) to make a case for private sector firms and households. The removal of fuel subsidy in 2023 was intended to reduce government expenditure and promote economic efficiency. However, it led to an immediate rise in fuel prices, transportation costs, and inflation, which adversely affected household welfare because it increased production costs for private firms. An ex-post facto and descriptive research design was adopted, relying solely on secondary data obtained from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), World Bank, and BUA Cement Plc annual reports for the period 2015–2025 to ascertain the relationships among fuel subsidy removal, inflation, and purchasing power. Consequently, analytical tools such as descriptive statistics, correlation, and t-tests were employed to determine that relationship. The study findings revealed that fuel subsidy removal significantly affected the profitability of private firms (r = 0.957; t = 9.84), increased inflation (t = 3.01 > 2.262), and that inflation had a significant effect on purchasing power (r = 0.91). The study concludes that although subsidy removal may enhance fiscal stability in the long run, it creates short-term inflationary pressures that weaken purchasing power and raise operational costs for firms. Accordingly, the study recommends that government should implement some measures of social protection, provide tax incentives for affected firms, and ensure transparent reinvestment of subsidy savings into infrastructure that support economic development among others.

Keywords:

Assessment, water quality, surface water, ground water, physicochemical parameters,

Abstract

This study evaluated the quality of borehole and surface water in a University community in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria, with reference to WHO permissible limit for drinking water. Eight borehole water samples were collected strategically from various points within the university community and its environs. Besides, three water samples were collected upstream, midstream and downstream of the surface water. Thirteen physicochemical parameters including Total dissolved solids, conductivity, pH, among others, were tested for the eleven water samples. The concentration of selected heavy metals such as arsenic, lead, cadmium, mercury etc.,were also tested to check their compliance to WHO permissible limits for portable water. Standard analytical procedures for testing the quality of water samples were employed for the study. The findings from the result show that only five out of the thirteen tested physicochemical parameters were within permissible limit with WHO standards for drinking water, which include TDS, sulphate, nitrate, fluoride and dissolved oxygen..  The result of the hypothesis test showed that there is no significant difference between the physicochemical parameter values  except for the BOD at p:0.0241<0.05 ; there is significant difference in the concentration of arsenic at p: 0.0248<0.05 for the ground water and surface water samples. It is therefore recommended that borehole and surface water in the university community should be properly treated before consumption. Also, government and other stakeholders should provide alternative treated borehole or pipe-borne water for the University community.

The Protection of Minority Rights under Islamic Legal Frameworks
Keywords:

Minority rights, Shariah, Ahl al-Dhimmah, Islamic law, human rights, pluralism, justice.

Abstract

The protection of minority rights within Islamic legal frameworks represents a vital aspect of justice and social harmony envisioned by Shariah. Rooted in the Qur’an, Sunnah, and early Islamic governance, the Islamic legal system ensures the dignity, safety, and religious freedom of non-Muslim minorities (Ahl al-Dhimmah). The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) established clear principles guaranteeing equality before the law and safeguarding the lives, property, and worship of all citizens regardless of faith. Classical jurists, such as Imam Abu Hanifah and Imam al-Shafi‘i, developed legal mechanisms for coexistence and mutual respect between Muslims and non-Muslims. Historical evidence from the Rashidun Caliphate and later Islamic empires demonstrates practical models of pluralism and tolerance grounded in divine law. Contemporary Islamic scholarship reinterprets these principles in light of modern human rights discourse, emphasizing harmony between Islamic justice and universal human rights standards. Thus, Islamic jurisprudence provides a robust moral and legal foundation for protecting minorities, promoting peaceful coexistence, and ensuring social equity across diverse communities.

Keywords:

Septoplasty, Deviated Nasal Septum, Headache, Quality of Life, ENT Surgery

Abstract

The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of septoplasty on the intensity and frequency of headaches in patients with deviated nasal septum attending Abu Ali Sina Regional Teaching Hospital in 1404. This descriptive-analytical study included 60 randomly selected patients. Data were collected using questionnaires that captured demographic information and assessed headache intensity and frequency. Results showed that the mean headache intensity decreased from 6.5 before surgery to 3.2 after surgery (p = 0.001). Headache frequency also reduced from 5 days per month to 1.5 days (p < 0.001). Gender-based analysis indicated that men experienced greater improvement than women, and age-based analysis revealed significant reductions in headache intensity across all age groups, although patients aged 46–65 showed relatively less improvement. These findings highlight the positive impact of septoplasty on reducing headache intensity and frequency and improving patients’ quality of life. The results of this study can contribute to the development of more effective treatment protocols and better management of symptoms in patients with a deviated nasal septum.
