Abstract
Contemporary engineering practice confronts a common challenge across diverse domains: the need to manage complex systems that must operate reliably while meeting increasingly stringent sustainability requirements. This article examines three distinct areas of modern engineering practice—cloud-based customer relationship management data integration, multi-cloud DevOps infrastructure management, and sustainable aviation operations—to develop an integrated perspective on systems management for reliability and sustainability. Despite their apparent diversity, these domains share fundamental characteristics: they involve distributed systems with multiple interacting components; they require continuous monitoring and adaptive management to maintain performance; and they operate under constraints that demand optimization across competing objectives. The analysis develops a conceptual framework that identifies four common dimensions of integrated systems management: architectural abstraction, adaptive resource allocation, reliability engineering, and sustainability integration. The article argues that progress in these domains depends on recognizing these commonalities and adopting management approaches that balance reliability, efficiency, and environmental responsibility. It concludes by proposing directions for future research and identifying implications for engineering practice.
